Hurrah! Tim passed the swallow test with ease today, and by evening was scarfing down such delectables as hot apple juice, applesauce, sweet potato puree, water, and miso broth.
And what's more and better, the feeding tube is gone!
Tonight he'll wear the Passy-Muir valve all night long. No respirator support at all. If he should need to go on the respirator, the doctor left orders to take blood gases before putting him back on. Then we'll have an objective measure of how well his lungs are doing.
He spent the afternoon making phone calls with the help of Ron, one of his PCAs (all of whom have been sidelined along with Tim for the past 4+ weeks).
Recuperation: it's Latin for "desiring again." Remember how I talked about Tim's wanting things as the sign of better times? I think we're back there. Tim sure wants more than applesauce. Good night, y'all.
